THe METEORITE AND TEKTITE. COLLECTIONS
OF YALE UNIVERSITY
KARL K. TUREKIAN
PEABODY MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY AND
DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY, YALE UNIVERSITY
The last catalogue of the meteorite collections at Yale Uni-
versity was made by Kurt Servos (1956) and included the Peabody
Museum Collection and the Bosch Collection which was provi-
sionally deposited at Yale University in 1949. The Bosch Collec-
tion was transferred to the U. S. National Museum in 1966. A
number of new acquisitions to the Peabody Museum Collection
by trading have been made since 1960. These are: Abee, Akaba,
Australite (tektite), Beddgelert, Billitonite (tektite), Bruderheim,
Kuttippuram, Leedey, Monze, Norton County, Orgueil, Pantar,
Pasamonte, Philippinite (tektite), Prairie Dog Creek, Ramsdorf.
The total number of different falls and finds now in the Peabody
Collection is 314.
The Peabody Museum Collection has been made available to
qualified investigators for research in the form of gifts or loans or
in exchange for other meteorite samples. A total of 37 different
meteorite samples have been utilized in these ways during the last
five years. These are: Alfianello, Bath, Bishopville, Bjurbole, Cape
Girardeau, Castalia, Cold Bokkeveld, Coopertown, Cross Roads,
Eagle Station, Elbogen, Estherville, Farmington, Forest City,
Frankfort, Holbrook, Homestead, Honolulu, Hvittis, Jelica,

Jerome, Juvinas, Krasnoyarsk, L’Aigle, Lance, Lime Creek, Ma-
gura, Mezo-Madaras, Mighei, New Concord, Parnallee, Pittsburgh,
Richardton, Stannern, Vigarano, Warrentown, Weston.
In the catalogue below, the style used by Brian Mason (1964)
for the catalogue of meteorite and tektite collections of the Ameri-
can Museum of Natural History has been followed. His classifica-
tion is also used for the sake of uniformity except that tektites are
assigned the symbol “T” and included in the body of the catalogue.
The Peabody Museum Collection is designated P, and a few speci-
mens in the Brush Mineral Collection included in this catalogue
are designated with the letter B. An asterisk (*) indicates an
observed fall.
Mr. David Johnson has assisted me in the curatorial work and
Mrs. Nancy Cott in the secretarial work associated with the com-
piling of this catalogue.
